Native Terrestrial - Cyp. candidum

Cypripedium candidum

Common name:   White Lady's Slipper

Range:   South-central Canada and Midwest to southern New England states

Blooming season (in Ohio):   mid May

Habitat:   Calcareous bogs and fens, wet alkaline meadows in full sun.

Comments:   This species grows only four to ten inches tall.   The lip of the flower is only about one inch.   Populations of this plant have become rare and isolated, as much of its former habitat has been converted for agriculture.   It is unusual in that it likes full sun as long as the roots stay cool and moist.   It is restricted to alkaline habitats.
